I have been passionate about teaching for many years, demonstrating this in my roles as Princeton review instructor, undergraduate and medical school tutor, chief resident and chief fellow. I am currently very involved with medical students and residents, being a mentor for medical students and core faculty for the neurology residents, as well as coordinating the neurology rotations. I am now transitioning to become the program director for the Mercy Health St. Mary's Neurology residency. I am excited to help residents achieve their goals and provide a comprehensive neurology education.

I am also currently the Medical Director of the Sleep Center at Mercy Health St. Mary's and work as a neuro-hospitalist. I have clinical interests in Sleep disorders related to neurology, aka "neurosomnology," especially Parasomnias, Narcolepsy, Parkinson's and MS in sleep. I have done some research with REM sleep behavior disorder. I enjoy giving lectures and conferences on sleep disorders.

The patients are kind, the community is supportive and the people at Mercy Health are pleasurable to work with. In addition, much of my wife's family is in the west Michigan area.

I am actively involved in medical student and resident teaching. I work very closely with medical students and residents during their rotations at our vascular neurology clinic at the Hauenstein Neuroscience Center and inpatient neuro-hospitalist and stroke service at Saint Mary's Hospital. They have first-hand experience with taking care of acute stroke patient's during intravenous thrombolytic therapy and neuro intervention including intra-arterial t-PA and mechanical thrombectomy.

Our stroke program is a part of NIH StrokeNet in collaboration with the University of Michigan. We are actively working on several research projects including the use of SyphagmoCor in stroke prevention and the use of iPAD technology in stroke patients with aphasia and severe dysarthria. We are also participating in other various NIH and industry sponsored trials such as POINT, MILE STONE study and RESPECT ESUS trial.

I enjoy mentoring medical students and residents in their research projects related to acute stroke care and stroke prevention. Two of my mentees, Emmanuella Joseph and Ryan Carrier, MSU-2, received 2016 American Heart Association Student Scholarship in Stroke Research. I have helped many medical students and residents in publishing manuscripts and preparing and presenting posters at national and international neurology and stroke meetings.

I thoroughly enjoy working with trainees (students, residents and fellows). My primary interest is clinical education. As the first neurointensivist here at Saint Mary's I am excited to share some of the details of the field with our faculty, our strong nursing staff and our residents.

My recent research interests have been in the areas where psychiatry and neurocritical care overlap with regards to outcomes (ex: delirium in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage).

I am an active participant in athletic activities from basketball to the martial arts - if you're interested, let me know. When I am not working or studying to improve my knowledge base, I am cooking and baking with my wife. We have been known to bring in treats from time to time. If you like food, let us know! Why I chose to practice in Grand Rapids...

My wife and I chose Grand Rapids for several key reasons:

1) Grand Rapids has enough of the 'city feel' we are used to and like. There are great restaurants, cultural activities and outdoor activities for us to do. More accessible and livable than Chicago (where we've spent most of our time).

2) It is closer to family.

3) It may sound corny or like a canned line but... the truth is, the people and culture at Saint Mary's are unlike any hospital I've worked with or interviewed with. They truly are supportive. They are interested and invested in our success. That matters.

Current ongoing research is focused on non-pharmacological treatments utilizing meditation as an intervention in people suffering from neurodegenerative disease such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Together with an international group of Movement Disorders specialists we are examining the impact of continuous dopaminergic stimulation on non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s. Partnering with Michigan State University, we are examining the impact of BDNF polymorphism status on the efficacy of STN Deep Brain Stimulation to determine whether STN DBS patients with a BDNF polymorphism exhibit a lower magnitude of symptomatic benefit, compared to patients who carry the normal BDNF gene and how this may impact quality of life.

Dr. Pickut has participated in Parkinson's clinical research studies phase II-IV (43 in number) since 1992 both as co-investigator and principal investigator. She has had direct experience with DBS in patient selection, intra-operative and post-operative management and together with the neurosurgery department started the first DBS center in the Province of Antwerp, Belgium in the early 1990's. She collaborated with genetic researchers at the University of Antwerp in large-scale replication and heterogeneity in Parkinson disease genetic loci research leading to publications. Her research group in Belgium identified the prevalence of non-motor symptoms in the population being served in order to better address the needs of people with Parkinson’s. Building on that, Dr. Pickut conducted a researcher driven RCT, as PI, investigating the effects of meditation training in PD. Dr. Pickut served as an Expert in Parkinson's Disease for the Federal Government of Belgium on the Neuromodulation Committee and Federal Orphan Drug Committee to examine the use of carbdopa-levodopa intestinal gel. She was appointed as Faculty of the Neurology Specialty Board of Medicine Belgium.

Teaching or other awards

I have been interested and involved in teaching of medical students and residents mainly in an outpatient setting and look forward to it.

Why I chose to practice in Grand Rapids...

Nice, clean and safe place to live in wooded suburban areas not far from work without heavy traffics of big cities.

Why I chose to practice in Grand Rapids...

I joined a multispecialty group in 1998 because I wanted to be in a physician-owned medical/surgical group. As the practice of medicine evolved in Grand Rapids, this became an untenable model, particularly for subspecialty medical practices. I have found the practice of medicine in GR to be sophisticated, balanced, and efficient. The patients are gracious, and they challenge us to seek excellence. The educational opportunities are boundless.
